Timber information
Our larch timber is very durable and protected from the elements
Our timber posts are pressure treated, which means they can withstand ground and fresh water contact without rotting. The timber does not require any additional protection and can be left as it is. The larch posts can be painted or stained if you would like them to match other timber in your garden, but it’s not required from a protective point of view.
The general lifespan of a pressure treated larch post is 15 years. If the posts were installed in an area that’s generally very wet (ie an area that water logs during heavy rain or an area covered with woodchips) then they may not last as long. If your post rots within 1 year of installation then it’s likely a faulty post and we will replace it for you.
The posts are kiln dried to prevent them from splitting
In the warmer months, especially if your posts are in direct sunlight for long periods of time, will may see splits in your timber. This is nothing to worry about and the post will tighten back up as soon as there’s moisture back in the air, during the cooler months.
As part of the treatment to protect the posts, the posts are dried to a moisture content of less than 28%, before being loaded in to an airtight vessel and then flooded with preservatives. The dryness is what causes the splits to show in the warmer months, and it’s also what controls the splits and stops them from getting too big.
The posts can be reused if you move house and want to take them with you
When the time comes to remove your installation, it’s relatively easy to do and we can provide a guide on the best way to do it.
